Take time to search beyond the programs listed here: eligibility criteria and application processes vary widely. Deadlines are often about six months before a program begins, so it is helpful to start early and keep track of them.

• US Quantum Information Science Summer School (USQIS) — a summer school hosted by the DOE National Quantum Information Science Research Centers and open to junior or senior undergraduates and above. In the year I applied, international students were also eligible.
• Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) — SURF programs are offered by many universities and research institutions. They typically fund summer research with a faculty mentor, but their eligibility criteria and application processes vary. Applying to external SURF programs is especially valuable for international students who may not be eligible for REU or SURI programs. MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, and other institutions operate their own programs.
• Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) — a national summer research program across NSF-funded fields for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and U.S. nationals.
• Summer Undergraduate Research Internship (SURI) — a summer research internship for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
